Brother Marquavious “Memphis” Irving is a Journeyman Glazier with DC 82 who takes pride in his trade and in being involved beyond just the job site, by supporting his union and its members.
What is your trade / job title?
I am a Journeyman Union Glazier and an active member of DC 82. I take pride in my trade and in being involved beyond the job site by supporting the union and our members.
What motivated you to engage with the Black CORE Committee?
I got involved with the Black CORE Committee because I wanted to be part of a space where people who look like me and share similar experiences can come together. From the start, it felt safe and inclusive, with titles and positions not mattering. That respect and sense of equality made me want to get involved.
What does the Committee provide for members? Is there camaraderie or
volunteering opportunities?
The Committee is a family-oriented space where members can communicate openly, support each other, and build real friendships. We meet at least monthly, and I’ve even volunteered outside our meetings, helping with job sites and career fairs through CBTU, the Coalition of Black Trade Unions.
Why is it important to be an active union member?
It’s important to be active right now because of what’s happening in the world and within our
workplaces.
Right now, it’s more important than ever to be active because, at times, members may not feel treated equally or fairly. The Black CORE Committee provides hope and reassurance that we have allies in our union. It also helps ensure our voices are heard, respected, and represented.
Did another member or DC 82 leader inspire you to join?
I have to give credit to Art Hill, also known as CORE Committee Director. I met him when I was an apprentice just starting out, and he always treated me with respect. He checked in on me, encouraged me to stay focused, and reminded me to keep sight of my goals.
What do you hope that the Committee will accomplish this year?
This year, I hope the Committee continues to grow, especially in Minnesota, and strengthens connections across the IUPAT. The Committee is more than a group; it’s a safe space where we can connect with others who may be facing similar challenges, and I hope more members take part and build those bonds.
